Drama after the novel by Anna Seghers.
In an adaptation for Badische Landesbühne by Kathrin Mayr.
Marseille 1940: Thousands are fleeing from the NS-regime, waiting for their transit papers. Among them a young German, who, following the suicide of author Weidel, assumed the author’s identity. Now, the papers enable him to prepare his escape to Mexico.
In Marseille, he meets Marie and falls in love. Marie is longing for a future overseas, but she can’t apply for a visa without her husband. The young man soon realises that Marie is the late author’s wife. Marie however is convinced that Weidel is still alive. Without telling her, the young man goes to the consulate, requesting travel papers for Marie, as she is now ‘his’ wife.
Anna Seghers, who escaped to Mexico via Marseille herself, gives an account of this state of being in transit, which is the lived reality of millions of people today.
