Season's Greetings

Christmas travesty by Alan Ayckbourn

Christmas – the season to be jolly! Once a year, everyone gets together to celebrate in harmony. And, as every year, it goes completely sideways.

Belinda and Neville Bunker are no exception: Uncle Harvey plans to give the kids real firearms. Neville’s aunt Phyllis turns cooking into alcohol-drenched chaos. Her husband Bernard is preparing his dreaded puppet theatre. Buffy Eddie doesn’t look after his kids. Which drives his wife, pregnant yet again, up the walls. When handsome Clive arrives, author and current lover of Belinda’s mother Rachel’s crush, the chaos under the mistletoe turns outright life-threatening. Because uncle Harvey did wrap other things, besides weapons!

Alan Ayckbourn, the grandmaster of British satire picks apart the festive insanity with relish. Turbulent theatrical entertainment with a hefty dose of British humour.

Director Johanna Hasse bets on precicely choreographed slapstic with headstrong objects, full physical exertion, and near disrobement - the Bruchsal audience audibly enjoyed the premiere.

Sibylle Orgeldinger / Bruchsaler Rundschau

20.11.2023

Especially Evelyn Nagel gives a convincing, jealous mother Rachel, and Martin Behlert and Hendrik Vogt are absolutely credible as the child-like, playful slackers Neville and Eddie.

Jens-Eberhard-Jahn / Fränkische Nachrichten

23.11.2023

Whether it was the dry humor, the - very realistic and well executed - drunk scenes of Aunt Phyllis (Cornelia Heilmann), or the heated confrontation between Clive (Lukas Maria Redemann) and Belinda (Alice Katharina Schmidt) – they were all thrilling. The audience was especially amused by Bernard's (Frank Siebers) puppet play, which was so dreaded by the whole family

Elisa Hörner / Main Echo

23.11.2023

Director Johanna Hasse sets the play up as a tumultuous comedy, giving her nine actors a lot of freedom. And there is plenty of tumult happening on this Christmas get-together ...

Pia Geimer / RNZ

04.12.2023

What works perfectly is the merciless exaggeration of the individual characters up to the brink of insanity. The appealing stage design and costumes by Christian Klein are as convincing as is the lighting by Tilo Schwarz, which gloriously illustrates the process of a Christmas-spirit going sideways.

Felix Röttger / Main Post

05.12.2023

Within the past ten years, the hall probably has never been this packed during "theatre hour". Even though it was a celebration of probably the creepiest of all Christmas get-togethers since the beginning of time – or maybe that was the reason?

adb / RNZ

11.12.2023

This was not the evening for the well-disposed audience to be prudish or in need of harmony. If there ever was a time the Badische Landesbühne with her energetic ensemble did not hold back, this was it.

adb / RNZ

11.12.2023

Two and a half hours of shenanigans, slapstic, and relationship chaos, it's not easy to pull off. That requires an ensemble of the calbre of Badische Landesbühne

Gerhard Keck / Schwarzwälder Bote

23.12.2023

Badische Landesbühne has summoned a high-profile ensemble for these hair-raising family constellations (...) the applause at the end – as well as during the performance – was long, rhythmic and loud

Johanna Graupe / Acher-Rench-Zeitung
