Family saga by Andrew Bovell
Orig. When the Rain Stops Falling
German translation by Maria Harpner & Anatol Preissler
Alice Springs, Australia, 2039: The rain keeps endlessly falling, the end of the world is near. Andrew is visiting his father Gabriel York, who abandoned him many years ago. Which sends Gabrial into panic-mode, because he didn’t prepare anything to eat. Suddenly, a fish drops out of sky and right at his feet. A sign?
Lindon in the 1950s: Elizabeth and Henry Law are leading a perfectly idyllic life with their son, Gabriel. At least until Elizabeth suddenly kicks out her husband. 30 years later, Gabriel Law desperately tries to find his father in Australia. Instead, he meets Gabrielle, whose parents had committed suicide, because they just couldn’t get over their son’s unsolved murder. What is the connection between these two strangers?
In When the rain stops falling, Australian author Andrew Bovell lays out the story of two families, a tale in which the past, the present, and the future merge, and that spans four generations and two continents.
When the Rain Stops Falling was commissioned and originally produced by Brink Productions in Australia, developed in collaboration with Hossein Valamanesh. The world premiere in Adelaide, Australia in February 2008 was co-presented by Brink Productions, State Theatre Company of South Australia and the Adelaide Bank Festival of Arts.
