Heimsuchung

Multimedia-Performance after the novel by Jenny Erpenbeck

In an adaptation for Badische Landesbühne by Daniel Schüßler & Hanna Held

A house on a lake in the Mark of Brandenburg. The events of the past one hundred
years can be traced in the inhabitant’s lives. A story of possession and loss, of war, and of the reunification of Germany.

A datcha is the site of close to a dozen lives, from the 1920s up to today. The house and its inhabitants experience the Weimar Republic, the Third Reich and its end, East Germany, the reunification and the time after. Jenny Erpenbeck finds a unique form for each individual fate. Each of which develops its own drama. Together, they paint a picture of the past century that is disturbing, uplifting, unsettling, and conciliating.

The East Berlin author Jenny Erpenbeck tells the tale of political shifts in Germany. At Badische Landesbühne, the novel transforms into a multi-media performance. A few from the outside on ourselves, it's as timeless as it is current.

Heimsuchung in simple language

The play is about a house that is almost 100 years old. The play is also about the people who lived in the house. The play tells the stories of the people, and the history of Germany.

Many things happened in Germany in the last 100 years. There was the first democray. Then came the Nazis and the Second World War. Germany was separated in East and West Germany. In the year 1990, Germany became one country again.

The play tells the stories of people who lived in the house in those times.

Sometimes the stories make you feel uncomfortable, sometimes comfortable. Sometimes they are terrifying, sometimes happy.

In the play there is video and sound. It is a modern version.

Daniel Schüßler delivers his stage adaptation (with Hanna Held) with poetic motifs and touching moments that will not soon be forgotten

B. Hayer / Deutsche Bühne

27.09.2025

Amidst the confusion, director Schüßler and video designer Tommy Vella manage to create moments of almost unbearable intensity.

S. Orgeldinger / BNN

29.09.2025

Through its sensitively crafted visual langue and atmospheric density, the production managed to turn the timeless relevance of Erpenbeck's work into a tangible experience. (...) The tilted stage becae a metaphor for insecure, precarious circumstances and the looming threat of slipping into a catastrophe.

F. Röttger / Fränkische Nachrichten

15.10.2025

Powerful applause for a emphatically uncomfortable production that did not offer reassurance, but demanded examination and discussion.
